At the Columbia Records convention in 1974, it was announced that Streisand signed with Columbia Records for another five years—although her manager, Marty Erlichman, told Billboard Magazinethat he had a verbal agreement with Columbia but no signed contract yet.

Billboard Magazine reported that Streisand “previewed some four songs from the new package [note: Butterfly ] to tumultuous approval in the Saturday closing spot at the CBS convention.” [Note: her set list is unknown.]

Columbia Records VP, Charles Koppelman, told columnist Joyce Haber: “This album [ Butterfly ] is not only one of the best, it'll be one of the biggest Barbra's ever made. She wouldn't be closing our convention in August singing songs from it if I didn't think so.”

At the Columbia Records convention, Barbra also sang her hit “People” and she told the audience, “I've been singing this song for ten years, but I only just learned what it meant...”
