Barbra and EGOT

By: Matt Howe

In our celebrity and awards-obsessed culture, EGOT has become a recent thing. EGOT is the acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.  A person in the entertainment field who has an EGOT designation is considered to have won the “Grand Slam” of show business awards. There are even EGOT watch lists — celebrities who are one award away from becoming an EGOT!

Barbra Streisand is an EGOT. She’s won several Emmys and Grammys; two Oscars; and one Tony Award ... which is why you will see her EGOT status challenged or footnoted online by those who are splitting hairs.

You see, one of Streisand’s wins was honorary — not achieved in competition with others.  Barbra’s Tony, presented in 1970, was for “Star of the Decade” — and it was awarded for her body of work, not for a specific role.  There are other semi-EGOTs, most notably James Earl Jones and Liza Minnelli, whose acronyms include similar honorary wins. And this puts them (according to critics and pundits online) in a lesser EGOT category ... or simply disqualifies them from EGOT status.

It’s silly to argue that somehow Audrey Hepburn and Marvin Hamlisch are “better” entertainers because they won their four awards in competition and Streisand and Minnelli did not.

And let's be real .... EGOT was coined by Miami Vice actor Philip Michael Thomas around 1984. At the height of his fame, he wore a gold medallion around his neck emblazoned with the acronym as an aspirational vision for his career — awards to win that would certify his greatness. (He also said it had double-meaning: “Energy, Growth, Opportunity, and Talent” ... but I digress.)

I doubt that Barbra Streisand is kept awake at night wondering about her EGOT status. She has been decorated with hundreds of awards in many factions of the entertainment business as well as for her environmental and charity work.  For decades.

Congratulations, Barbra!  Well done!
