About the Album

“Streisand does nothing here to raise concerns over the National Treasure status of her pipes. She remains pretty much incomparable, and her phrasing still sounds as fussed-over as ever. One need only listen to the way she hits the crescendo at the word ‘on,’ near the end of ‘Something New In My Life’ or her warm reading of ‘The Same Hello’ to get the message.”

“What matters most is friendship and love,” Streisand stated about the title of her album of songs by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. “And I love the Bergmans and we’ve been friends for almost half a century. I thought it was a good time to sing more of their songs that I love that I just haven’t gotten around to singing.”

The idea to record an album of Bergman songs was born in May 2009 when Barbra Streisand participated in a tribute to Alan and Marilyn at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in Los Angeles. “Knowing how she dislikes appearing in front of a lot of people, we were all the more appreciative of her participation,” the Bergmans wrote. “And when she said, ‘My next album is going to be a tribute to you guys,’ we were speechless.”

Alan Bergman told the Toronto Star in 2010 that Streisand's “next CD is a tribute to us and she wants to sing songs that she’s never sang of ours. She’s recorded over 50 songs of ours, but there are many that she hasn’t done, and she’s picked several and we’ve written three or four new ones for her.”

Streisand’s process of approaching this album was simple. “I asked them to send me a tape of every song that I haven’t sung,” she said. “And listening over and over, I just picked my favorite ones to make up an album.”

Streisand and the Bergmans first met, Streisand said, “when I was about 18 years old. They were young writers who had come to the attention of Funny Girl and Gypsy composer Jule Styne. He was set to produce a Broadway show they’d written with composer Sammy Fain titled Something More! After a long day of auditioning singers, Jule encouraged them to check out this new ‘kid’ who was playing nightly at The Bon Soir. They came... we met... and that is essentially how our love affair began.”

In the album’s liner notes, Streisand wrote: “The main reason I’ve made this album is that I want to thank Alan and Marilyn for a lifetime of love. Not only have they provided me with many beautiful songs to sing, but also as important, they've nurtured my soul and spirit.”

Work began on the album “with the brilliant orchestrator Bill Ross,” the Bergmans explained. Together, “the arrangement, the musical environment for each song was decided upon. Then came the most focused, careful work at her recording space which she calls ‘Grandma's House’— a small cottage on the grounds of her Malibu home. Rehearsing, discovering the songs.”

Barbra began recording the album in January 2011.  “I sit right outside the recording booth so she can see me cry,” Marilyn confessed, “because it is the litmus test [of a song] if Marilyn is crying.”

Jay Landers, credited for A&R on this album (Artists and Repertoire), wrote that “the orchestra tracks ... took a mere three days to record ... The actual studio process was reminiscent of the ‘old days’ (early 1960's) when she used to record and mix and entire LP faster than it takes most engineers to get a good drum sound these days.”

Produced by Streisand, What Matters Most is comprised of ten Bergman songs which she has never previously recorded. The CD was packaged in a jewel box with a 24-page color booklet. (Streisand revealed “Up until the last minute I was working on just the color of peach that I wanted some of the pages to be.”)

A Deluxe Version of the album was released that contained a bonus disc with ten previously released, but iconic Bergman songs recorded by Streisand.

Amazon ran a video of Streisand discussing the new album; and Richard Jay-Alexander (co-director of Barbra’s concert tours) appeared on the shopping channel QVC, which offered the Deluxe Edition of the album with a bonus DVD [runtime is 21:14]. The DVD contained interview footage of Streisand and the Bergmans, as well as footage of Streisand from MusiCares singing “The Windmills of Your Mind” and “I’ll Never Say Goodbye.”
