The Ed Sullivan Show:
Entertainer of the Year Awards

Aired: September 20, 1970 on CBS

Television Titan Ed Sullivan opened the new season of his variety show on CBS with The American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA) Entertainer of the Year Awards — or the “Georgie Awards” (made in the likeness of the late entertainer George M. Cohan). The show was taped at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Barbra Streisand was the winner of top female entertainer of the year. Ed Sullivan introduced a pre-taped video clip of Barbra singing “On A Clear Day You Can See Forever” from the International Hotel in Las Vegas.

After the song, Sullivan introduced Mayor John B. Lindsay who, in New York, presented Barbra with the award — after making a joke about the smog and her new film, On A Clear Day You Can See Forever.

Barbra gave a short, humorous speech: “As George M. Cohan used to say, ‘I don't care what they say about me as long as they spell my name right.’ As for me, I don't care what they say about me as long as they spell my name wrong.”

This was Barbra Streisand's last appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. His variety show had a very long run — from 1948 until June 6, 1971. Streisand appeared on it five times.  Sullivan supported Streisand when she was just starting out, and even had her back as her film career was skyrocketing!
