The Grammy Awards (1986)

Aired: February 25, 1986 on CBS

Barbra Streisand — after achieving number one status with her record The Broadway Album — made an exciting appearance on the 1986 Grammy Awards. {Note: Her album was not eligible for the 1986 Grammys; she would return in 1987 and win the Grammy for The Broadway Album.}

Barbra received a special introduction by the Grammy host, Kenny Rogers: “I can't think of anyone more qualified to make this next presentation. It's always a special time when you can say to a live audience, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Barbra Streisand.’”

Streisand walked on stage to the orchestra playing “Somewhere” and received a standing ovation. (Longtime fans were excited to see Barbra's curly, kinky hair was, instead, straight and gorgeous!)

Barbra presented the Trustees Award to George and Ira Gershwin. Gershwin's widow, Leonore, accepted on stage.

Afterward, Barbra told the press, “I don't appear very often [in public], but with these two gentlemen, it was impossible to turn down,” Streisand told the press room. Barbra made the black s suit jacket she wore and the silk handkerchief and ribbon tie accessories. “I like to wear men's clothes, but I wanted to have a long skirt, so I designed this.”
