This fundraiser, with tickets priced from $2,500 up to $12,500 (for dinner and a seat close to the stage), was hosted by the Hollywood Women's Political Committee and raised $4 million for the Clinton-Gore re-election campaign.

Attended by Hollywood Democrats like Shirley MacLaine, Richard Dreyfuss, Calvin Klein and Sharon Stone, the crowd of 1,000 people were serenaded by the Neville Brothers, the Eagles, and Barbra Streisand.

Streisand's Set

Introduced by Tom Hanks, who played emcee for the evening, Barbra sang “The Way We Were” and included some political lyrics near the end. Taking a swipe at the Republican's candidate, Bob Dole, Streisand sang, “Bob Dole may be critical and yet, while he's talking up his tax cuts, you're there reducing the debt!”

Next, she gave the audience a preview of the title song on her forthcoming album, Higher Ground .

Barbra spoke about the tendency of the press to tear people down. Then she sang a hopeful song, “Somewhere.”

After that song, Barbra was joined on stage by a choir of young singers. Together they sang “At the Same Time,” another new song from Higher Ground .

Streisand fans should note that this audience received a preview of two songs from the Higher Ground album, which wouldn't be released for another year!
