ABOUT THE SINGLE

In November 1966, Columbia Records ran an all-out advertising and merchandising campaign for Barbra Streisand's new single of the Christmas classic “Silent Night” — artistically retitled as “Sleep In Heavenly Peace (Silent Night).”

Columbia issued “Silent Night” with a special picture sleeve. On the back of the sleeve were the rave reviews of her concert performance of the carol — Streisand sang it live during her four concerts in summer 1966, a move most reviewers found to be audacious ... singing a holiday song during the heat of summer?!

Streisand recorded four Christmas tunes — including these two — in London in June with the arranger Ray Ellis.  She would release her Christmas Album later in 1967, after recording the rest of the tunes in September ‘67 with Marty Paich arrangements.

In 1967, Columbia put out “Silent Night” again to radio stations with a new picture sleeve that matched four other promotional Streisand Christmas singles from the album.
