The People's Choice Awards were created by producer Bob Stivers in 1975. The first show aired on CBS, and the host, Richard Crenna, told the press: “The Neilson Company (of television rating fame) polled thousands of Americans and asked for their favorite movies, movie stars, TV shows and TV stars and sports and music favorites. It really is a people's award.”

Presented at the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, The People's Choice Awards included Barbra Streisand winning the first annual “Favorite Motion Picture Actress.”

Introduced by Sammy Davis, Jr., Barbra accepted the trophy and said: “This award has a special meaning for me because I've always had the greatest respect for audiences. It's uncanny but they cannot be fooled. You cannot be fooled. You keep an actor honest because you are the finest barometer of the truth, so, I'm really very proud to receive this award from you, the audience. Thank you all very, very much.”

The awards show has traded ownership over the years.  To date, the E! network acquired the rights to The People's Choice Awards; they tally votes from online polls and broadcast the show on their network.
