ABOUT THE SINGLE

Clive Davis was named vice president and general manager of Columbia Records in 1966. In an attempt to stay current (albums and singles by the Beatle, Janis Joplin, and Motown artists were big hits with teens), Davis hired Jimmy Wisner in April 1968.

Wisner (nicknamed “The Wiz”) arranged and conducted big 1960s hits like “I Think We're Alone Now” for Tommy James & The Shondells, Len Barry's “1-2-3” and “The Rain, the Park and Other Things.”

Meanwhile, Columbia had spent the last months of 1967 publicizing Barbra's two albums — Simply Streisand and A Christmas Album; and Barbra had gone to Hollywood to film Funny Girl.

“Our Corner of the Night,” an up-tempo song written by George Goehring and Stanley Wayne Rhodes, was in the “Uptown Soul” genre. Streisand's vocals were doubletracked (i.e. two tracks of Streisand's voice playing together) and Columbia's female background singers contributed “oohs” and “ahhs” to the record.

“He Could Show Me” was a ballad from a 1967 Off-Broadway show called Now Is the Time for All Good Men with lyrics by Gretchen Cryer and music by Nancy Ford. Barbra's singing sister, Roslyn Kind, told Canadian TV in 2010 that she recorded the original demo for “He Could Show Me.”

“Our Corner of the Night” never cracked the Billboard 100 but did place on Billboard's Bubbling Under the Hot 100 list at number 107 on March 16, 1968 and stayed on the charts for five weeks. Billboard also charted it on its Top 40 Easy Listening chart — peaking at #21.

Billboard's chart rival, Cash Box Magazine, calculated “Corner” debuting at #80 on the March 16, 1968 Cash Box Top 100 chart.

Both of these songs have never appeared on a Barbra Streisand album and have never been released digitally.
