"Tell Him" paired Barbra Streisand and then 29-year-old Celine Dion on a dramatic ballad written for them by David Foster, his wife Linda Thompson, and Walter Afanasieff, and produced by David Foster and Walter Afanasieff.

The big duet was the first single released from Barbra’s album, Higher Ground. The song was also included concurrently on Celine’s album, Let’s Talk About Love. The music video, filmed at the Los Angeles, was really part of a Celine Dion documentary project for her record label 550 Music.  “The strategy,” Billboard magazine wrote, “was to assemble a video newsreel similar to an electronic press kit for use by TV news media and entertainment programs, to create a film for a potential full-length theatrical release in the U.S. and Canada, and to distribute footage for multiple overseas purposes, such as TV specials. Portions of footage shot at L.A.’s Record Plant, where Dion and Streisand came together to record ‘Tell Him’ became the clip for the song.”

Beautifully filmed, the video showed Dion and Streisand chatting with the songwriters, then singing the song together (they actually recorded it separately but lip-synced together for the cameras).

“Tell Him” premiered on the cable music video channel VH1 on October 24, 1997.

The Celine Dion documentary (with the “Tell Him” video) was included on her live concert DVD called Au coeur du stade — two versions are on the DVD: “S’il suffisait d’aimer” is the French version, and “Let’s Talk About Love” is the English version with French subtitles. (DVD is out of print; if purchasing a used copy of this DVD, make sure to check the DVD region code — this disc was released in Canada and may not be compatible on U.S. DVD players).
