The Tonight Show — 1963 Appearances

The Tonight Show has aired on the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) for over 60 years and is the longest-running talk show on television. Barbra Streisand's last appearances on the show with host Johnny Carson were in 1963.  She returned to The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon 51 years later!

In 1963, Streisand's first Broadway show had just closed (I Can Get It For You Wholesale), but her record company had also released Streisand's first two singles. Also, in February ‘63 Columbia Records released Streisand's first album — The Barbra Streisand Album.

    • ** LEGACY date from previous Streisand lists. I can’t find her in the TV listings. One listing says these were the guests: Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Paul Ford, Dr. Joyce Brothers. Therefore, I don't believe this date belongs on her official t.v. appearances list.

Photographer Bill Eppridge followed Barbra Streisand around with his camera for a few days in February 1963, on assignment by Life magazine.  He captured her rehearsing for The Tonight Show, and several moments from the taping of the show.  Peter Daniels accompanied her on piano.

Eppridge's photographs from this show, plus many others from early in Streisand's career were collected in the book Becoming Barbra, released by Rizzoli in 2018. You can order it from Amazon.com here.
