Voices for Change (1988)

Dukakis Hollywood Fundraiser
Beverly Hills, CA

October 16, 1988
Chevy Chase, Kitty Dukakis, and Streisand.
Sponsored by the Hollywood Women's Political Committee to benefit presidential candidate Michael Dukakis, Barbra Streisand performed for 700 people. The event took place on the lawn of movie producer Ted Field's (Three Men and a Baby) Beverly Hills mansion, called Greenacres in Benedict Canyon. Most Angelenos know the place as the former estate of silent film star Harold Lloyd.

An array of superstars entertained that evening:  Ashford and Simpson sang “Solid As a Rock”; Bette Midler provided comedy and song; and Barbra came out singing “Happy Days Are Here Again” and “America the Beautiful”

HWPC member Patricia Duff Medavoy told the press, “This evening was a huge success. One, because we raised over $800,000. Two, because everyone is leaving with their spirits buoyed,  alive and energized to do more work.”

George H.W. Bush won the presidential election that year.  It should be noted that when Dukakis was disparagingly called “a card carrying ACLU member,” his team responded by creating TV spots in which celebrities like Burt Lancaster and Jill Eikenberry looked into the camera and said they were “proud to be card-carrying members of the ACLU.” Barbra's (donated) rendition of “America the Beautiful” played during the spots, too.
