The National Organization of Women's 1992 Elect Women for a Change campaigns helped double the number of women serving in Congress and sent an unprecedented number of feminists and people of racial and ethnic diversity to state capitals and Congress.

At a $500-a-person fund-raising dinner held by the Hollywood Women's Political Committee at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills,Barbra Streisand provided the theme of the evening as she addressed the attendees.

Streisand said: “Women are a majority of this nation. We have borne and raised its children, worked side by side with men in war and peace. We care for the elderly. We teach the young. We pay taxes. And we contribute to our nation's culture. It's time we had a place at the table where the life and death decisions of the country, the world and the planet are made.”

Mistress of Ceremonies, Lily Tomlin, introduced Barbra and a chorus of stars, including Goldie Hawn, Patti Austin, Dionne Warwick, and Cybill Shepherd. Together, they all sang a new song by Marvin Hamlisch with lyrics by Marilyn & Alan Bergman called “Common Threads.”  There was chatter in entertainment columns that Barbra would record the song, but she never did.
