Creating the Iconic Photograph

Francesco Scavullo was an American fashion photographer known for his celebrity portraits and magazine covers.

Scavullo was one of Streisand’s go-to photographers in the 1970s. He took the iconic photo of Kristofferson and Streisand which was used in all of the ads for A Star is Born. And his beautiful portrait of Streisand with long hair appeared on the cover of her album, Classical Barbra.

Scavullo told one Streisand biographer how this photo session came together. After Barbra Streisand asked him to photograph her and Donna Summer, Scavullo flew to Los Angeles. “When I got to her house, Barbra asked, ‘What’s your idea? What do you wanna do? How do you wanna take pictures?’ She and Donna Summer had all these clothes assembled. I turned to my assistant, Sean Byrnes, and said, ‘I don't see them with clothes.’ Sean said, ‘I'll take care of it.’’’

Model Carol Alt clarified that “Sean [Byrnes] was everything to Francesco. He chose the girls, he ran the studio, he did the styling,” Alt said.

Byrnes bought two Merry Widows at a store in Hollywood and brought them back to the house. The idea was to contrast their skin and boost their bosoms. “Barbra is marvelous,” Scavullo related. “She is very intelligent. If you give her a good idea she'll grab it fast.”

In his book, Scavullo on Beauty, Francesco wrote: “Barbra Streisand is a striking and unusual beauty. She has a strong sense of herself and a good eye for what works for her. I love to work with her because she knows exactly what she wants.”
