Climate control isn’t really possible at an outdoor venue like the Hollywood Bowl, but the skies knew better than to rain on Barbra Streisand’s parade Friday evening. They threatened, but Mother Nature wasn’t about to launch an all-out assault on this Brooklyn-born, Malibu-enthroned diva. It may have been too chilly for top-notch singing, but icons of a certain age don’t have to prove themselves night after night. Twinkling is enough for their fans, and Streisand did more than hover like a distant planet and glow.

LOS ANGELES CONCERT NOTES

  • Celebrities in the audience 11/9: Bette Midler, John Stamos, Ted Danson & Mary Steenburgen, Sally Kirkland, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, David & Victoria Beckham, Ryan Murphy.
  • Celebrities in the audience 11/11: Seth Rogen, Lea Michelle, Chris Colfer, Rob Lowe, Warren Beatty & Annette Bening, Kristin Chenoweth, Jane Fonda, Gary Marshall, Eric McCormack, Beau Bridges.
  • Because of the Bowl’s smaller size, Barbra’s staging was changed a bit.
  • Bill Ross walked out and his orchestra played the National Anthem. The audience stood.
  • Both evenings were cold for Los Angeles! Barbra joked about it for the first few songs (“Can I borrow your earmuffs?”). By the time she sang “Didn't We,” she had gloves on; As she left the stage in Il Volo's hands she joked, "I was going to slip into something more comfortable but I think I'll put on a coat!" ... and sure enough, when she came out in her sparkly pantsuit after Il Volo, she had donned a furry coat.
  • Barbra mentioned how nice it was to be back home in L.A. and sleep in her own bed; she also admitted the roses on her table were from her garden and had much better fragrance than the hothouse-grown roses on tour!
  • They showed photos from her 1963 concert at the Hollywood Bowl, and Barbra recalled the reflecting pool that used to be in front of the stage in the 1960s.
  • During the Q&A, when one fan said her mother saw Streisand at the Bowl in 1963 and the ticket cost $6.95, Streisand responded: “In a way, they’re still $6.95. You just have to add a couple more zeroes.”
  • Barbra sat right next to Jason during his solo song — the heater was there!  Also, because the stage was different, there was no ramp or steps for her to sit on, like in previous cities.
  • Barbra still wore her coral-colored gown for the second act; she wrapped herself with a black shawl to keep warm.
  • Before “Happy Days” with Roslyn, Barbra showed a photo of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Democratic nominee for President, at the Hollywood Bowl in 1932. That patter led into Happy Days.
  • The Hollywood Bowl had several different or altered musical cues: The Funny Girl overture was cut short last night; At the end of act one, Bill Ross played the Gypsy coda followed by what sounded like the original Funny Girl Broadway exit music; The second act opened with a shorter I Remember Barbra and segued into the Funny Girl clip; Barbra was played on after Chris Botti with "Sing A Song."
